Male Enhancement Herbs: Fact or Fiction?

broken image

Male enhancement herbs - sounds like a dream come true, a completely natural way for men to boost libido and last longer in bed without any unpleasant side effects. For centuries men have been searching for ways to help retain or improve their natural vigour. Numerous substances found in the natural world are reputed to work. Even today, the internet abounds with ads for all kinds of herbal supplements that supposedly can help a man’s sexual performance.

But, do effective male enhancement herbs actually exist?

Throughout history men have always been eager to find ways to improve their sexual function naturally. In all epochs of human history men’s natural vigour has diminished somewhat with age, or illness creeps in to impair a man’s sexual function – and men start looking for a way to boost their libido and increase their sexual performance. Men find this especially important in the later part of life when their wives are often prone to reach their sexual peak.

In centuries past, maintaining virility and sexual function may have even been a matter of life or death. According to the anthropologist Sir James Frazer in his ground-breaking work The Golden Bough, kings in ancient or primitive societies had to remain virile. Here’s one example of the sort of thing that was reported to happen:

“It used to be the regular custom with the Shilluk to put the king to death whenever he showed signs of ill-health or failing strength. One of the fatal symptoms of decay was taken to be an incapacity to satisfy the sexual passions of his wives, of whom he has very many… When this ominous weakness manifested itself, the wives reported it to the chiefs, who are popularly said to have intimated to the king his doom by spreading a white cloth over his face and knees as he lay slumbering in the heat of the sultry afternoon. Execution soon followed the sentence of death.” Sir James George Frazer. The Golden Bough.

Given this sort of climate, it’s not surprising that men began to comb through the natural world trying to find some form of male enhancement herb that would boost their performance. Legends abounded regarding certain substances: the dried penises of animals that were considered to be particularly virile or macho, such as tigers or stags, and mushrooms that had an elongated penis-like shape, and so forth.

Lots of Fiction About Male Enhancement Herb - What About Facts?

Some of the things that were used as male enhancement supplements didn’t actually work; things like tiger’s penises, rhino horns and snake’s blood. If a man appeared to have an enhanced sex drive after taking one of these “natural male enhancers”, it was probably due to what scientists call the “placebo” effect. The placebo effect is what happens when someone believes that a certain product will help them, and it’s the belief rather than the supplement that does the trick. In the case of the animal products mentioned above, this was all that was going on. While these supplements didn’t do any harm (apart from the damage to the tiger, rhino or snake), they didn’t do anything to help the men either. They guys who ate them may just as well have tried eating carrots (another reputed male enhancement herb that relies on its shape and the placebo effect).

Some natural male sexual enhancers worked well enough, but had unpleasant side effects. The classic example of this was Spanish fly (Cantharides). Cantharides was derived from a ground up green beetle and because of its irritant properties, it could stimulate sexual desire. It was a very popular aphrodisiac but it had several unpleasant side effects – including death, as cantharides was also used as a poison. It was particularly popular with the notorious professional poisoners of Renaissance Italy. Other side effects included priapism, the dangerous condition of having a permanent erection, and blistering. Today, cantharides is illegal for use as a male enhancement product, but it does have a very limited medical use as a topical treatment for removing warts.

Currently, anything that is marketed as a male enhancement herb, especially if being sold by a top rated company, is the result of scientific research and development, much like prescription drugs. It has to be proven safe to take with no adverse side effects. Furthermore, it has to pass clinical tests to ensure that it actually does work to help boost a man’s libido and/or sexual performance.

Thanks to the collusion of corporate America with Big Pharma, their traditional views of natural herbal medicines, and science and the medical world as a whole, has resulted in them focusing on synthetic, lab-created male enhancement pills. There is no money for them in herbal remedies because they can’t patent them.

However, there is a growing number of traditionally educated physicians who have transitioned into alternate treatments, suggesting specific vitamins and herbal supplements whenever possible. They sometimes write prescriptions for drugs, but strive to get their patients off of them as quickly as possible. They have learned over the years that there are many physiological problems that can be dealt with effectively with vitamins and herbs, and they often suggest a male enhancement herb instead of Viagra or Cialis.

One particular herb comes up time and again as being a successful male enhancement herb in many complementary medical journals, as well as several mainstream journals: it’s called Tongkat Ali, also known as Eurycoma longifolia. Here’s a sample of some of the comments researchers have noted about this herb:

  • “The results showed that E. longifolia produced a dose-dependent, recurrent and significant increase in the episodes of penile reflexes as evidenced by increases in quick flips, long flips and erections of the treated male rats during the 30 min observation period. These results provide further evidence that E. longifolia increases the aphrodisiac potency activity.” (Ang HH, Ikeda S, Gan EK. Evaluation of the potency activity of aphrodisiac in Eurycoma longifolia Jack. Phytother Res. 2001;15:435–6.)
  • “Hence, the proandrogenic effect as shown by this study further supported the traditional use of this plant as an aphrodisiac.” (Ang HH, Cheang HS. Effects of Eurycoma longifolia jack on laevator ani muscle in both uncastrated and testosterone-stimulated castrated intact male rats. Arch Pharm Res. 2001;24:437–40.)
  • “This study lends further support to the use of the plant by indigenous populations as a traditional medicine for its aphrodisiac property.” (Ang HH, Ngai TH. Aphrodisiac evaluation in non-copulator male rats after chronic administration of Eurycoma longifolia Jack. Fundam Clin Pharmacol. 2001;15:265–8.)
